This is the first chapter in the book called ‘The Language Of New Media’ by author Lev Manovich.
This chapter basically listed what new media is, he starts this by saying in general what new media is, for example computer games, animation, internet etc. Then he says what new media would be in TV, shows shot in digital video and edited using digital editing workshops. He also mentions about feature films that are animations or digital compositions. Then he adds about general photographs, text and other such digital compositions that can be printed on paper.
Then he basically says that new media is anything that uses computer for distribution and exhibition. Then he adds about photographs that are on CD-Roms, electronic books and websites are also new media and anything done on analogue isn’t.
He then says how we are going through a new revaluation of computerization to produce, distribution and communication, saying that its allowed us to communications in storage, text, sound and all other medias that communicate with people.
He then gives us a brief history on computerization, how the first computers started off as calculators for governments or big companies. Then computers shifted to storage, photo, sound, movie making etc. This adding to what new media is.
This chapter is yet short but is a good introduction to the book, he writes his information formal and easy to understand. There’s not much in-depth description on this chapter, but other chapters that I flicked through give information more in-depth and in a easy way to understand.
As this chapter is only a starting point, he gets the point across in the way of basically saying this is new media, giving examples of his points that are very logical.
